Jon: Let's talk about the book Exodus now you're probably familar with this book because the epic story of Moses leading Israel out of slavery in Egypt.
출애굽기를 살펴보겠습니다. 아마도 여러분은 모세가 노예였던 이스라엘을 이집트로부터 구해낸 이야기로 출애굽기에 익숙하실 거예요.
Tim: Yeah, but that's just the first half at the book. The second half has Moses giving the Ten Commandment to Israel along with these blurprints for making a sacred tent. Now right here in the middle of this story that connects these two halves together and it takes places at the foot of a famous mountain.

Jon: OK, let's start back at the beginning.

Tim: So the first thing we have to remember is we're continuing this story from Genesis.

Jon: In Genesis God promised Abraham that through his family all the nation of the earth will be blessed. And Genesis ends with Abraham's family down in Egypt. Wehen Exodus begins, four hundred years have passed, the family grows and becomes the people group now called Israel.
창세기에서 하나님께서 아브라함을 통하여 열방이 복을 받을 것이라고 약속하셨습니다. 창세기는 아브라함의 가족이 이집트에 내려간 것으로 끝이 납니다. 400년 후 출애굽기가 시작되면서 가족이 왕성해서 이제 이스라엘 민족이 되었습니다.
Tim: But there's this huge problem because the Israelites are enslaved to the King of the Egyptians, a guy called Pharaoh.
그러나 문제는 이스라엘 민족은 이집트의 노예입니다. 바로왕의 노예죠.
Jon: This guy is really bad news.
네, 이 사람은 정말 나쁜 사람입니다.
Tim: Yeah, he is horrible. He disregards their humanity. He brutally enslaves them. And he even orders that all of the Israelite sons should be killed by throwing them into the Nile River. He wants to wipe these people out, he is the worst character in the Bible so far.
정말 끔찍하죠. 그는 인류를 무시하고, 잔혹하게 노예로 삼았습니다. 그는 이스라엘을 몰살하려고 모든 이스라엘 사내아이를 죽이고 나일강에 버리라는 명령을 했습니다. 그는 지금까지 성경에 등장한 인물 중 최악입니다.
Jon: Here's where we meet an Israelite woman who wants to save her son.

Tim: And so she does throw them in the reiver, but safely in this little reed basket.
그녀는 작은 갈대상자에 아이를 넣어서 나일강에 띄웁니다.
Jon: And Pharaoh's daughter finds this baby and take him as her own.
그리고 바로왕의 딸이 이 아이를 발견하고 자신의 아들로 삼습니다.
Tim: And this is the boy who grow up to become Moses, the man who will rescue Israel from slavery.
이 아이는 자라서 모세가 되고 이스라엘을 노예에서 구해냅니다.
Jon: So Moses grows up, and one day much later in his life he has this crazy encounter with God. Where he comes across a bush thats on fire, but it isn't actually burning up.
그렇게 모세는 자라고, 어느 날 놀랍게도 떨기나무 불꽃 가운데 하나님을 만나게 됩니다. 그 떨기나무는 불이 붙었으나 타지 않았습니다.
Tim: And God speaks from the bush, and he appoints Moses as the man he will use to deliver Israel.
하나님께서 떨기나무에서 말씀하시길 모세를 이스라엘을 구원하라고 명령하셨습니다.
Jon: So Moses goes to Pharaoh to tell him this news that God wants His people free.
그리고 모세는 바로왕에게 가서 '내 백성을 보내라' 고 말했습니다.
Tim: And Pharaoh, he just pretty much laughts at him, "Who is this God, Yahweh?"
바로왕은 비웃으며 "여호와가 누구냐?" 하며 보내지 않습니다.
And, in fact he is so offended by this request he decides to make the Israelites work evern harder.
바로왕은 화가 나서 이스라엘을 더욱 힘들게 괴롭힙니다.
Jon: So discouraged, Moses goes back to God and says, "Listen, this plan's not gonna work."
너무 속상하네요, 모세는 하나님께 가서 "하나님, 계획대로 안되고 있는데요"라고 말씀드립니다.
Tim: But God repeats His promise that He's going to rescue them. And in fact, it's right here for the first time in the Bible that we hear the word "redemption". It literally just means 'to purchase a slave's freedom'. But God here uses this word to describe what He's going to do for enslaved Israel.
그러나 하나님은 '모세가 이스라엘을 구출할 거라'는 약속을 반복하십니다. 그러고 처음으로 성경에 등장하는 단어가 있는데요, "속량"입니다. 단어의 뜻은 '노예를 돈을 주고 사서 자유케 한다'입니다. 그러나 하나님은 이 단어를 노예된 이스라엘을 구해내는 데 사용하십니다.
Jon: And God knows Pharaoh is going to resist so he sends ten different plagues one after another... like turning water into blood... sending all sorts pests and disease... These plagues are really severe.
하나님은 바로왕이 거절할 것을 아시고 열 재앙을 보내십니다. 재앙이 하나씩 일어납니다. 물이 피로 변하고, 각종 벌레들과 질병을 보내십니다. 이러한 재앙은 정말 심각했습니다.
Tim: They are severe. But what we need to understand is that the story if presenting these as acts of divine justice against one of the worst oppressors in the story of the Bible. And they are aimed at the purpose of rescuing these enslaved people and defeating the God's of Egypt.
네 그렇죠. 그러나 이 사건들은 성경의 가장 흉악한 압제자 중 한 명을, 하나님의 정의로 심판하는 것으로 이해해야 합니다. 그리고 이 재앙들의 목적은 노예 된 이스라엘을 구해내고 이집트의 신들을 물리치는 것입니다.
Jon: This all comes to a climax at the tenth plague... where God is going to kill the first-born sons across all Egypt, every house, it is pretty rough.
이제 이야기는 절정인 열번째 재앙으로 치닫습니다. 하나님은 이제 이집트 각 집의 첫 번째 아들을 죽이기로 합니다.
Tim: It is. But is also God's response for how Pharaoh killed the Israelite sons.

Jon: Now as you turn the page, you suddenly get two long chapters of detailed instructions for what's essentially throwing a dinner party with a recipe for lamb...?

Tim: Yeah, but this lamb is super important. God tells the Israelites to pick it out and to prepare it to be eaten. And they are supposed to take its blood and then paint all over the door frame of their house. And anyone who is in the house will be spared from this final plague. And so this mean, which is called "Passover". It commemorates this key moment in the story where God brings his justice on human evil, but also shows mercy by providing this substitute.
네, 양은 정말 중요해요. 하나님은 이스라엘에게 양을 준비해서 먹으라고 하십니다. 그리고 양의 피를 문설주와 문 지방에 바릅니다. 그 집에 있는 사람은 누구나 마지막 재앙에서 피해 갈 수 있습니다. 그래서 이 식사를 "유월절"이라 합니다. (넘어간다) 유월절은 하나님께서 인간의 악을 심판하시는 동시에 자비를 베푸시는 것을 기념하는 것입니다.
Jon: This final plague makes Pharaoh angry, and demands that Israel get out of Egypt, which is great! But suddenly, as they leave, Pharaoh changes his mind-he has "a change of heart."
이 마지막 재앙은 바로왕을 격노하게 했고 그는 이스라엘을 이집트에서 나가게 합니다! 좋은 소식이죠. 그러나 놀랍게도, 그들이 이집트를 떠나자 바로왕은 마음이 변합니다.
Tim: But on top of that, we are also told that "God hardens Pharaoh's heart."
무엇보다도 "하나님께서 바로왕의 마음을 완악하게 하셨다"는 것입니다.
Jon: Why would God do that?
왜 하나님은 그러셨나요?
Tim: Well, what we need to remember is that over and over in the story Pharaoh has already chosen to harden his own heart... so at this point, Pharaoh, he's not just evil, he's become monstrously evil. Even his own advisers think that he has gone way too far. And so how was God supposed to deal with such an extreme form of evil? And what we see in the story is that God uses his power to lure evil into its own destruction.

Jon: Pharaoh and his army are destroyed in the Red Sea as Israel passes into freedom. As people praise God for redeeming them.

Tim: And after this we find the very first song of worship in the Bible. And it is in this story that the word salvation is also used for the first time, whichmeans simply, 'to be rescued from danger'.
그리고 성경에서 첫 번째 찬양을 찾아볼 수 있습니다. 백성들이 그들을 속량한 하나님을 찬양합니다. 그리고 여기서 처음으로 '구원'이라는 단어가 사용됩니다. 구원의 뜻은 '위험에서 구출한'이라는 뜻입니다.
Jon: Now that they're saved, you would think that everything should be great... but the story quickly turns. The Israelites start wandering in the desert. They are tired, hungry, lost. And you start to wonder what's God doing? What are they saved for?
그들은 구원받았으니 이제 모든 게 잘 될 거라 생각하겠죠. 그러나 이야기는 반전을 맞이합니다. 이스라엘은 사막을 거닐며 지치고, 배고프고, 길을 잃습니다. 그리고 하나님은 뭘 하시는 걸까 우리를 왜 구원하셨을까 의구심을 갖습니다.
Tim: And we learn the answer to that question in the next story which ties the two parts at this whole book together.
그리고 이 책 전체를 연결하고 있는 바로 다음 이야기에서 그 답을 알 수 있습니다.
