예수님의 고난 이후의 부활절이 다가옵니다. 2015년에 같은 책을 타이핑하면서 공부한 적이 있는데 2021년 어떤 모습으로 출애굽이 그려질지 궁금합니다. 나의 '애굽'은 어디이고 내가 해방되어야 할 '출애굽'은 어디이며, 출애굽한 이후 '어디로' 가야 하는지? 그 갈림길에서 출애굽을 공부합니다.

출애굽기, 성경의 두번째 책이죠. 이야기는 창세기에서부터 연결되는데요. 아브라함의 손자 야곱이 70명의 대가족을 이끌고 이집트에 갑니다. 야곱의 열한 번째 아들인 요셉은 이집트에서 두 번째로 높은 지위에 오르게 되고 요셉은 기근 가운데 그의 온 가족을 구하게 됩니다. 이집트의 왕인 파라오는 그의 가족들에게 안전한 피난처인 이집트에서 살기를 제안합니다. 마침내 야곱은 이집트에서 죽고, 요셉과 다른 형제들도 다 죽게 됩니다. 

The book of Exodus. It's the second book of the Bible and it picks up the storyline from the previous book, Genesis, which ended with Abraham's grandson Jacob leading his large family of seventy people down to Egypt. Now Jacob's eleventh son Joseph had been elevated to second in command over Egypt, and he had saved his whole family in a famine. And so Pharaoh the king of Egypt offered the family to come live there as a safe haven. And so eventually Jacob dies there in Egypt and Joseph and all his brothers do too. 

400년 정도가 흐르고 출애굽기가 시작됩니다. 출애굽(이집트에서의 탈출)이라는 이름에서 보듯이 전반부는 이집트에서 일어나는 사건이고 후반부는 시내산에서 일어납니다. 이 영상은 출애굽기의 전반부(1-18장)를 다룹니다. 400년이 흐르고 이스라엘이 '생육'하고 '번성'하고 온 땅에 '가득'하였습니다(1:7) 이 구절은 에덴동산에서 하나님께서 사람에게 주셨던 복 (창1:28)을 되풀이하고 있습니다. 이것은 우리에게 중요한 성경의 사건을 떠올리게 합니다. 인류는 죄와 반역을 통해 하나님의 복을 상실했습니다. 하나님은 아브라함의 가족을 선택하시고 그들을 통하여 온 세상에 하나님의 복을 재현하려고 하십니다. (창17:1-6)

About 400 years pass and the story of Exodus begins. Now that name refers to the event that takes place in the first half of the book-Israel's exodus from Egypt, but the book has a second half that take splace at the foot of Mount Sinai. In this video we'll just focus on the first half, where centuries have passed and the Israelites were fruitful and multiplied and they filled the land. Now this line is a deliberate echo back to the blessing that God gave all humanity back in the Garden of Eden. And it reminds us of the big biblical story so far. Humanity forfeited God's blessing through sin and rebellion and so God chose Abraham's family as the vehicle through which he would restore his blessing to all the world. 

그러나 이스라엘을 복으로 여기지 않는 파라오(바로왕)는 날이 갈수록 증가하는 이민자 이스라엘 자손들을 권력을 위협하는 세력으로 여깁니다. 그래서 파라오는 하나님의 복의 근원인 이스라엘 민족을 멸망시키려고 합니다. 마치 창세기에 기록된, 하나님의 복을 반역한 인류처럼 말이지요. 파라오는 이스라엘 민족을 노예 삼아서 학대하며 어려운 노동으로 생활을 괴롭게 합니다. 그리곤 히브리 남자아이가 태어나면 나일강에 던지라고 명령합니다. 파라오는 성경에서 최악의 인물인데요. 파라오의 왕국은 하나님께 대항하여 반역하는 인류의 전형을 보여줍니다.

But the new Pharaoh does not view Israel as a blessing. He actually thinks this growing Israelite immigrant group is a threat to his power. And so just as in Genesis, humanity rebells agaisnt god's blessing, so here Pharaoh attempts to destroy the source of God's blessing, the Israelites. He brutally enslaves them in forced labor and then he orders that all the Israelite boys be drowned in the Nile River. Now Pharaoh, he is the worst character in the Bible so far. His kingdom epitomizes humaniity's rebellion against God. 

파라오는 자신의 유익에 따라 선과 악을 재정의하고 심지어 무고한 아이들을 살해하는 것이 자신에게 선한 것이라고 여깁니다.
이집트는 창세기의 바벨보다 더 악한 곳이 됩니다. 이제 이스라엘은 새로운 바벨에서부터 구해달라고 울부짖고, 하나님은 응답하십니다. 하나님은 먼저 파라오의 악을 바꾸어 사용하십니다. 남자아이를 낳은 이스라엘 엄마가 갈대상자에 아이를 넣어 나일강 갈대 사이에 둡니다. 그 아이는 안전하게 파라오의 가족의 품으로 들어가게 되죠. 그의 이름은 모세이고, 자라나 하나님께 파라오의 악함을 심판하는 도구로 사용됩니다.

Pharaoh has so redefined good and evil according to his own interests that even the murder of innocent children has become good to him. And so Egypt has become worse than Babylon from the book of Genesis and so now Israel cries out for help against this new Babylon and God responds. God first turns Pharaoh's evil upside down, as an Israelite mother throws her boy into the Nile River but in a basket. And so he floats safely right down into Pharaoh's own family. He's named Moses and he grows up to eventually become the man that God will use to defeat Pharaoh's evil. 

유명한 이야기인 떨기나무 불꽃 가운데 하나님께서 모세에게 나타나셔서 ‘파라오에게 가서 이스라엘 자손을 애굽에서 건져내라’고 명령하십니다. 또한 하나님께서는 파라오가 이스라엘 민족 보내기를 거부할 것을 아시고 여러가지 재앙으로 이집트를 심판할 것이며, 파라오의 마음을 완악하게 할 것이라고 말씀하십니다.

In the famous story of the burning bush, God appears to Moses and commissions him to go to Pharaoh and order him to release the Israelites. And God says that he knows Pharaoh will resist and so he will bring his judgment on Egypt in the form of plagues. Then God also says that he will harden Pharaoh's heart.

이제 이야기의 주요 사건인 하나님과 파라오의 대결 장면을 보게 되는데요, 하나님께서 파라오의 마음을 완악하게 할 것이라고 하신 것이 무슨 의미일까요? 이것이 이 부분을 읽어가는데 아주 중요합니다. 모세와 파라오의 첫 번째 만남에서 파라오의 마음이 완악해진 것을 보게 됩니다.

And so we're introduced into the next main part of the story-the confrontation between God and Pharaoh. Now what does this mean that God says he will harden Pharaoh's heart? It's super important to read this section of the story really closely in its sequence. In Moses and Pharaoh's first encounter we're told simply that Pharaoh's heart grew hard. 

그리고 이제 하나님께서는 첫 번째 다섯 가지 재앙을 보내십니다. 이집트의 신들을 상징하는 재앙을 통하여 하나님께서는 이집트의 신들을 심판하십니다. 그때마다 모세는 파라오에게 가서 이스라엘 백성을 가게 해달라 요청합니다. 그러나 각 재앙이 끝날 때마다 파라오의 마음은 단단해져 완악하고 완강해졌습니다. 파라오는 계속 자기 뜻대로 행동하고 기어이 두 번째 다섯 가지 재앙이 내립니다. 우리는 여기서 하나님께서 왜 파라오의 마음을 완강하게 하셨는지 듣게 됩니다. (출10:1-2)

There's no implication that God did anything. And so in response God sends the first of 5 plagues, each one confronting Pharaoh and one of his Egyptian gods. And each time Moses offers a chance for Pharaoh to humble himself and to let the Israelites go but after each plague we're told that Pharaoh either handended his heart or that his heart grew hard. He's doing this of his own will and so eventually it's with the second set of 5 plagues that we begin to hear how God hardended Pharaoh's heart. 

이 이야기의 핵심은, 하나님께서 파라오가 하나님의 뜻을 거부할 것을 아시지만, 그럼에도 불구하고 옳은 일을 할 기회를 계속해서 주신다는 것입니다. 그러나 마침내 파라오의 악함은 돌이킬 수 없는 지점에까지 이르게 됩니다. 심지어 그의 신하들이 조언을 하지만, 이미 그는 제정신이 아니었죠. 이제 하나님께서는 파라오의 악함을 하나님의 구속의 역사를 위해 사용하시게 됩니다.
하나님께서는 파라오의 파멸을 통해 하나님의 백성을 구하시는 것입니다.

So the point of the story seems to be this: even though God knew that Pharaoh would resists his will, God still offered him all these chances to do the right thing. But eventually Pharaoh's evil reaches a point of no return-I mean even his own advisers think that he has lost his mind. And it's at that point that God takes over and bends Pharaoh's evil towards his own redemptive purposes. God lures Pharaoh into his own destruction as he saves his people, which is what happens next. 

마지막 재앙인, 유월절 밤, 하나님께서 상황을 역전시키십니다. 마지막 재앙은, 파라오가 이스라엘의 아들들을 죽인 것처럼 하나님께서는 이집트의 첫아들을 죽이시는 것입니다. 그러나 파라오와는 다르게, 하나님께서는 어린양의 피로 이 재앙에서 피할 수 있는 길을 열어주셨습니다.

With the final plague, it's the night of Passover. And God turns the tables on Pharaoh. Just as he killed the sons of the Israelites, so God will kill the first born in Egypt with a final plague. But unlike Pharaoh, God provides a means of escape through the blood of plague. But unlike Pharaoh, God provides a means of escape through the blood of the Lamb. 

그리고 여기서 스토리가 잠시 중단되고 이스라엘 절기인 유월절을 자세히 소개합니다. 이스라엘이 이집트를 떠나기 전날 밤, 흠 없는 어린양을 잡고, 그 피를 집 좌우 문설주와 인방에 바릅니다. 그러면 마지막 재앙이 온 이집트를 뒤덮을 때, 어린양의 피로 덮인 집은 지나가고 (유월; Pass over) 그 아들은 살게 됩니다. 그리고 앞으로 매해 이스라엘 민족은 이 밤을 기억하고 하나님의 정의와 은혜를 기념해야 합니다.

And here the story stops and introduces us in detail to the annual Israelite ritual of Passover. On the night before Israel left Egypt, they sacrificed a young, spotless lamb and painted its blood on the door frame of their house. And when the devine plague came over Egypt, the houses covered with the blood of the Lamb were passed over, and the son spared. And so every year since, the Israelites have reenacted that night to remember and celebrate God's justice and his mercy.

그러나 파라오는 그의 자신감과 반항으로 인해 그의 아들을 잃고, 마침내 이스라엘 민족을 이집트에서 나가라고 합니다. 그리고 이스라엘 노예들은 드디어 이집트에서 탈출하게 됩니다. 그러나 얼마 가지 않아 파라오는 마음을 바꾸고 군대를 이끌고 이스라엘 민족을 쫓아갑니다. 이스라엘 민족이 홍해를 안전하게 건너고 파라오는 파멸의 길로 접어듭니다.

But Pharaoh, because of his pride and rebellion, he loses his own son and he's compelled to finally let the Israelites go free. And so the Israelite slaves make their exodus from Egypt, but no sooner did they leave than Pharaoh changes his mind and gathers his army and chases after the Israelites for a final showdown. As the Israelites pass through the waters of the sea safely, Pharaoh charges towards his own destruction. The Exodus story concludes with the first song of praise in the Bible.

그리고 이 출애굽의 이야기를 찬양의 노래(성경에 기록된 첫 번째 노래)로 부릅니다. '바다의 노래'라고 하는데 여호와께서 영원무궁하도록 다스리신다고 선포하며 (출 15:18), 하나님의 나라에 대해 시를 써갑니다. 즉, 하나님께서 어떻게 세상의 악을 다루시는지, 악의 노예가 된 사람들을 어떻게 구속하시는지 보여줍니다. 또한 하나님께서 약속의 땅으로 그의 백성을 인도해 가시며,
하나님께서 그 가운데 함께 임재하며 살아가신다고 노래합니다.

It's called the Song of the Sea and the final line declares that the Lord reigns as king. And then the song retells in poetry what the story of God's kingdom is all about. It's about how God is on a mission to confront evil in his world and to redeem those who are enslaved to evil. God is going to bring his people into the Promised Land where his devine presence will live amount them. 

이 찬송시는 하나님께서 그의 백성들의 왕이 되시는 것이 어떤 것인지를 보여줍니다. 이 찬송시를 마치고 스토리는 다시 시작이 되는데요, 이스라엘 민족은 시내산으로 가는 광야의 여정을 시작합니다. 그들은 배고프고 목이 말라서 모세에게 불평을 하고 심지어 그들을 구해내신 하나님께도 원망을 하며 심지어 이집트의 시절이 좋았다며 그리워하기까지 합니다. 그건 정말 말도 안 되는 얘기죠. 그러나 은혜가 많으신 하나님께서는 광야의 이스라엘 백성들에게 음식과 물을 공급하십니다. 

This story is what it looks like when God becomes king over his people. So after the Israelites sing their song, the story takes a sharp turn. The Israelites-they're trekking through the wilderness on their way to Mount Sinai and they're hungry, they're thirsty, and they start criticizing Moses and God for even rescuing them. They say they long for the good old days in Egypt. I mean, it's crazy. So God graciously privides food and water for Israel in the wilderness, 

그러나 이 스토리들은 어두운 그림자를 드리웁니다. 그리고 이런 의구심을 갖게 되죠. "이스라엘의 마음 역시 파라오처럼 완악한 것인가? " 네, 앞으로 곧 보게 될 것입니다. 그러나 여기까지가 출애굽기 전반부입니다. 

but these stories, they cast a dark shadow and we begin to wonder, "Could it be that Israel's heart is just as hard as Pharaoh's?" We shall see, but for now that's the first half of the book of Exodus.
