야고보서(James) 개요 -동영상 및 한글/영어 자막(BibleProject)

길고도 어려웠지만 큰 도움이 된 하나님의 지혜서 잠언 QT를 끝내고 야고보서로 들어갑니다. 전체 5장으로 구성된 야고보서는 '믿음'을 주제로 다루며, 시련당하는 믿음(1:1-18), 행하는 믿음(1:19-5:6), 그리고 승리하는 믿음(5:7-20)으로 구성됩니다.

히브리어로 야고보서는 '야고보의 서신(Epistle of James)'란 뜻이고, 그 책 이름은 '야고보서'의 저자인 야고보의 이름에서 유래되었습니다. 야고보서 1장 1절에서 밝혀지듯, 본 서신의 저자는 야고보입니다. 성경에 야고보란 이름을 가진 사람들이 많습니다.

The letter of James, or at least that's his name in English. If you look in the Greek, you will see that his name is Jakobos, which translates his Hebrew name Yáakov. And that's why most ancient and modern translations render his name as Jacob that's what we're going to call him in this video. 

야고보서, 영어 이름으로는 제임스입니다. 만약 당신이 그리스어로 읽으면 그의 이름은 야코바스(Iakobos)입니다. 히브리어로 번역해서 읽으면 야코브(Yáakov)입니다. 그 때문에 대부분의 고대와 현대 번역가들이 그 이름을 제이콥(Jacob)이라고 번역했습니다. 이 비디오에서 우리는 그를 제이콥이라 부를 겁니다.

Now there are many Jacobs in the New Testment. Two of them belong to Jesus's inner circle of the twelve disciples. But this letter comes from the Jacob who was the half-brother of Jesus himself. Now we learned this Jacob story from the book of Acts and from Paul's letters.

After Peter moved on from Jerusalem to go start new churches, Jesus's half-brother Jacob rose to prominence as a leader in the mother Church in Jerusalem. It was made up mostly of Messianic or Christian Jews. This was the first Christian community ever, and we know that it fell in hard time during the 20 years that Jacob was its leader. 

베드로가 예루살렘으로부터 새 교회들을 개척하러 가기 위해 이동한 후에, 예수님의 이복 동생 야고보는 예루살렘에 있는 모교회에서 리더로서 두각을 나타냈습니다. 그것은 주로 메시아닉 유대인 또는 유대인 그리스도인들로 구성되어 있었습니다. 이는 초대 그리스도인 공동체였고 그리고 우리는 야고보가 그 공동체의 리더로 있었던 20년 동안 힘든 시기에 빠져 있었음을 압니다.

There was a famine that led to great poverty in the region, and these Messianic Jews were being persecuted by the Jewish leaders in Jerusalem. But through it all, Jacob was known as a pillar of the Jerusalem Church. He was also known as a peacemaker who led with wisdom and courage until he was tragically murdered.

And in this book, we have the legacy of Jacob's teaching and wisdom, condensed into a short and very powerful work. The book begins like a letter. He greets all the Messianic Jews who were living outside the Land of Israel. But this does not read like one of Paul's letters, where he addresses specific problems in one local church. Rather, this book is a summary of Jacob's sage wisdom for any and every community of Jesus' followers. And Jacob's goal isn't to teach new theological information. Rather, he wants to get in your business and challenge how you live.

Jocob's wisdom has been heavily influenced by two sources. The first is Jesus' teaching about life in the kingdom of God. Specially the Sermon on the Mount, which is constantly echoing and quoting in the book. The second key influence is the biblical wisdom book of Proverbs. Especially the poems and proverbs 1 through 9. Jacob literally grew up with Jesus and with the book of Proverbs. And now his own teaching sounds like them. It's stamped by their language and imagery. The book consists of short challenging wisdom speeches that are full of metaphors and easy to memorize one-liners. 

야고보의 지혜는 두 가지 요소에 의해 깊은 영향을 받았습니다. 먼저 하나님 나라의 삶에 대한 예수님의 교훈입니다. 특히 산상수훈은 이 책에서 지속적으로 반복해서 인용되고 있습니다. 두번째 핵심요소는 성경의 지혜서인 잠언입니다. 특히 시편과 잠언 1-9장까지입니다. 야고보는 말 그대로 예수님과 잠언서와 함께 자랐습니다. 이제 그의 가르침은 그것들과 비슷해 보이며, 그들의 언어와 이미지를 새겨놓은 것 같습니다. 책은 짧고 도전적인 지혜의 연설문과 풍성한 은유들, 그리고 기억하기 쉬운 짤막한 문장으로 구성되어 있습니다. 

And in essence, Jacob is calling the Messianic community to become truly wise by living according to Jesus' summary of the Torah: 'To love God and to love your neighbor as yourself'.

책의 본론은 2-5장에 있습니다. 본론은 하나님의 사람들이 예수님의 길에 전심으로 헌신하도록 부르는 12가지 짧은 교훈으로 구성되어 있습니다.

The body of the book is in chapters 2 through 5, which consists of 12 short teachings to call God's people to wholehearted devotation to the way of Jesus.

그리고 본질적으로 야고보는 메시아닉 공동체들에게 진정으로 지혜로워지며, 예수님이 요약한 '하나님을 사랑하고 내 이웃을 내 몸과 같이 사랑하라'는 계명에 따라 살아가길 요청하고 있습니다. 

And altogether they don't develop one main idea in a linear way. Each teaching kind of stands alone and concludes with a catchy one-liner. But, all of these teachings are connected through key repeated words and themes - It's really cool.

그리고 이 가르침들은 모두 하나의 선형 방식 안에 하나의 주요 아이디어를 발전시키지 않습니다. 각각의 가르침을 기억하기 쉬운 한 문장으로 결론짓습니다. 그러나 이 모든 교훈들은 반복되는 핵심 단어와 주제들로 연결되어 있습니다. 아주 멋진 구성이죠.

At the opening of the books body, there are two teachings. First about favoritism and love. Jocob exposes how we tend to show favor to people who can benefit us, and we neglect people who can't usually because they're needy. Jocob says this is the opposite of love as Jesus to find it. 

책의 본론을 보면 두 가지 가르침이 있습니다. 우선 편애와 사랑에 관한 것입니다 (약 2:1-13). 야고보는 우리에게 이익을 줄 수 있는 사람에게 우리가 얼마나 편향적인 호의를 보여주는 성향을 가졌는지, 또한 우리가 보통은 궁핍하기 때문에 우리에게 이익을 주지 못하는 사람들을 얼마나 무시하는지 폭로합니다. 야고보는 예수님이 규정하셨듯이 이는 사랑과 정반대 되는 것이라고 말합니다 (마5:46-48).

He goes on to show what genuine faith does and does not look like. So if someone says that they have faith in God, but neglects people who are needy or poor, this person's faith is dead, he says. Their actions betray what they say they believe in. Ang genuine faith always results in obedience to Jesus' teachings.

그는 진정한 믿음이 무엇을 하는지와 그렇지 않은 것을 보여줍니다 (2:14-26). 자, 만일 어떤 사람이 그들이 하나님을 믿는다고 말하고 궁핍하거나 빈곤한 사람들을 무시한다면, 이 사람의 믿음은 죽은 것이라고 말합니다. 그들의 행동은 자신이 믿는다고 말한 것과 위배됩니다. 진정한 믿음은 항상 예수님의 가르침의 순종으로 이어집니다 (마7:21-27).

Now scattered through the body of the book, we find three different places where Jacob develops Jesus' own teaching about our words. So with the same mouth, we unleash pain upon people, and then go offer praise to God - so messed up! And also we judge people and then go talk badly about them behind their backs.

We also all tend to distort the truth to our own advantage. How we talk about people, opens up a window into our hearts and our core values. Our words tell the real truth about our character.

Jacob also believes that God's kingdom community as Jesus taught about it, is the kind of place where the divisions created by weath and social status are dismantled. So he warns first about the arrogance that wealth can create in people, who believe it will be around forever. He says 'No, your wealth will one day rot just like you.' 

야고보는 또한 예수님이 가르치셨듯이 하나님의 나라 공동체가 (약4:13-17, 5:1-6) 부와 사회적 지위에 의해 만들어진 구분이 해체되는 곳이라고 믿습니다 (마6:28-34, 마6:19-21). 그래서 야고보는 먼저 자신의 부가 영원할 것이라고 믿고 재산을 불리는 사람들의 교만에 대해 경고합니다. 그는 말합니다 "아니. 당신의 부는 어느 날 당신처럼 썩을 것입니다"

In contrast, God's people are to live with patience and hope for Jesus's return to set all things right. And this should inspire a life of faith filled prayer. Now this part of the book all of these teachings are so powerful and there's way more than we have time for in this video. But seriously read all of them and slowly. 

이와 대조적으로, 하나님의 사람은 인내와 소망으로 살아가며 모든 것을 온전하게 되돌리기 위해 예수님이 다시 오실 것을 기다리고 (약5:7-11), 또한 믿음에 가득 찬 기도의 삶으로 서로를 격려해야 합니다 (약5:13-18, 마21:21-22). 이제 책의 이번 파트의 모든 가르침들은 너무 강력해서 우리가 이 비디오에서 다루는 것보다 더 많은 것들이 있습니다. 하지만 모든 부분들을 진지하게 , 천천히 읽어보세요. 

Now, placed in front of these 12 wise teachings is the introductory chapter. It's a flowing stream of wise teachings and one-liners. And they're designed to sum up the main ideas of the entire book. This chapter actually introduces you to all the key words and themes that you're going to meet in chapters 2 through 5. Jacob opens by saying that he knows from personal expereince, life is hard. He was martyred after all not long aftyer writing this letter. 

이 12가지 지혜의 가르침들 앞에 소개하는 챕터가 있습니다. 짤막한 문장과 지혜의 가르침들이 흐르는 물줄기처럼 연결되어 있으며 이것들은 책의 전체 부분을 요약하는 주요 개념으로 구성되어 있습니다. 이번 쳅터에서 당신은 실제적으로 2-5장에서 접하게 될 핵심단어, 주제들을 소개합니다. 야고보는 자신이 얻은 개인적 경험을 통해 인생은 힘들다는 것을 이야기하며 편지를 시작합니다. 결국 그는 편지를 쓴 지 머지않아 순교를 당합니다. 

But he believes that life's trials and hardships are actually paradoxical gifts that can produce endurance and shape our character. God can do amazing work inside of us in the midst of suffering, and help us become perfect and complete. 

그러나 그는 인생의 고난과 역경은 실제적으로 우리의 인격을 형성하며 인내를 낳는 역설적인 선물이라고 믿습니다(약1:2-4). 하나님은 고난 가운데 우리 안에 놀라운 일을 하실 수 있으며 또한 우리가 완벽하고 온전해지도록 도우십니다.

Now that word 'perfect' it's really important for Jacob. He repeats it 7 times in the book. In Biblical Hebrew and in Greek, this word refers to wholeness. It means living a completely integrated life, where your actions are always consistent with the values and beliefs that you've received from Jasus. 

자, "온전한"이란 단어는 실제로 야고보에게 중요한 단어입니다. 그는 이 책에서 이 단어를 7번이나 반복해서 언급합니다. 
성경에서 히브리어, 헬라어로 이 단어는 '전체'를 의미합니다. 이는 완전히 통합적인 삶을 살아가는 것을 의미하며 당신의 행동들은 예수님으로부터 당신이 받은 믿음과 가치에 대해 언제나 동일하다는 것을 뜻합니다. 

Jacob knows that most of us actually live as fractured people with big inconsistencies in our character. We are all more compromised than we want to admit. However, God is on a mission to restore fractured people to make them whole. And it begins with wisdom - the ability to see my hardships through a new perspective. God will generously give this kind of wisdom to people who ask for it in faith without doubting God's character.  

야고보는 우리들 대부분은 우리의 인격과 아주 모순되어 분열된 사람들처럼 산다는 걸 압니다. 우리는 우리가 인정하는 것보다 더 많이 타협합니다. 그러나 하나님은 균열된 사람들을 완전히 온전케 하고 회복할 사명을 감당하시며 그리고 그것은 지혜- (자신의 고난을 새로운 관점을 통해 볼 능력)를 통해 시작됩니다. 하나님은 주님의 인격을 의심하지 않고 믿음으로 구하는 사람들에게 이러한 지혜를 주실 겁니다 (약1:5-8). 

And when we realize our humble and frail place before God, we are forced to choose between anxiety or trust. And true wisdom means choosing to believe that God is good despite my circumstances. So if it's poverty that's forcing you to into hard times in life, Jacob says 'try and view it as a gift that forces you to trust in God along'. And besides wealth is fleeting it's all going to pass away like wild flowers in the summer heat. 

우리의 초라하고 연약한 부분을 하나님 앞에서 깨달을 때, 우리는 신뢰와 불안 사이에서 선택해야 합니다. 그리고 진정한 지혜는 나의 상황에도 불구하고 하나님은 선하시다는 것을 믿기로 선택하는 걸 의미합니다. 그래서 만약 가난이 당신을 인생의 어려운 시간으로 이끌지라도, 야고보는 말합니다: "당신이 오직 하나님만 신뢰하도록 이끄는 선물로 그것들을 바라보십시오" 더구나 부는 여름철 태양 빛 아래 놓인 야생화처럼 사라질 겁니다 (약1:9-11)

And so when we do fall into hard times, don't accuse God. Let your circumstances teach you what Jesus taught about God's character. That the father is generous that he's there to meet us in our pain and he's trustworthy. It's this God who through Jesus has given us new birth to become new kinds of humans who can face their suffering with total trust in the father just like Jesus did. 

또한 우리가 어려운 시기에 빠질 때, 하나님을 비난하지 말고, 그보다 당신의 상황 가운데에, 예수님이 하나님의 성품에 대해 가르치신 아버지는 너그러우시며, 그가 우리의 고통 가운데 우리를 만나시고 그분이 미쁘시다는 것을 깨달으라고 합니다. 하나님은 예수를 통해 새사람이 되도록 우리에게 새 생명을 주셨고 하나님은 예수님이 하신 것처럼 아버지 안에 전적인 신뢰함으로 그들의 고통을 직면하게 합니다. 

And this new humanity is something we discover when we not only listen to God's word but do what it says. Jocob calls God's Word here 'The perfect Torah of freedom'. He's referring here to the great command of the Torah has passed on to through Jesus that he freed us to love God and love our neighbor. And Jacob shows practically what that kind of love looks like. It means speaking to others in a kind and loving way. It means serving the poor and it means living with wholehearted devotion to God alone.

그리고 이 새사람은 하나님의 말씀을 듣기만 하지 않고 그 말씀대로 행할 때 우리가 깨달을 수 있습니다 (약1:19-27) 야고보는 하나님의 말씀을 이렇게 부릅니다 "자유의 완전한 토라". 그는 여기서 예수님을 통해 우리에게 전해진 율법의 가장 위대한 명령을 언급하고 있습니다. 예수님은 우리를 하나님과 이웃을 사랑할 수 있도록 자유케 하셨습니다. 그리고 야고보는 실제적으로 사랑이란 어떤 것인지 보여줍니다. 그것은 다른 이들에게 친절하게 사랑의 방식으로 말하며, 가난한 자를 섬기는 것을 의미합니다. 

Now you can see how this opening chapter contains all the keywords and ideas explored more deeply in the 12 teachings of chapter 2 through 5. Jacob immersed himself in himself in the wisdom of Jesus and of the Proverbs and he's given us a great gift in this book of his own wisdom. This is a beautifully crafted punch in the gut for those who want to follow Jesus. And that is what the book of James or Jacob is all about.
