The Book of Jonah.
A subversive story about a rebellious prophet
who hates God for loving his enemies.
Jonah's unique among the prophets of the Old Testament
because they're typically collections of God's words spoken through the prophet.
But this book doesn't actually focus on the words of the prophet;
rather it's a story about a prophet, a really mean and nasty prophet. 

요나서입니다. 이 책은 하나님께 반항한 선지자에 대한 내용입니다.
그 선지자는 하나님께서 그의 원수들을 사랑하시는 것을 몹시 싫어했죠.
요나서는 구약의 선지서 중 매우 독특한데요.
대부분의 선지서들은 선지자들을 통해 하나님의 말씀이 기록되는데
이 책은 선지자를 통한 하나님의 말씀보다는
그 "선지자"에 대한 이야기가 기록되고 있기 때문입니다.
그는 좀 치사하고 고약한 선지자였죠.

Jonah appears only one other time in the Old Testament; 
it's during the reign of Jeroboam II, one of Israel's worst kings. 
And Jonah prophesized in his favor; 
promising that he would win a battle
and regain all his territory on Israel's northern border.

요나는 구약 다른 곳에서 단 한 번 등장합니다.
북 이스라엘의 악한 왕이었던 여로보암 2세가 통치할 때
요나는 왕의 편을 들어 예언했습니다.
전투에서 여로보암 2세가 이길 것이고
이스라엘 북방 경계를 이루는 영토를 모두 되찾을 것이라고 예언합니다.(왕하14:23-25)

Now it's important to know, 
that the prophet Amos also confronted Jeroboam
and through him God specifically reversed Jonah's prophesy; 
promising that Jeroboam would lose all those same territories 
because he was so horrible. 
So before the story of Jonah even begins, 
we are suspicious of Jonah's character. 

여기에서 기억해야 할 중요한 사실이 있습니다.
선지자 아모스는 여로보암2세에게 맞섰고
아모스는 요나와 상반되는 예언을 합니다.
아모스는 요나가 예언한 똑같은 지역을 여로보암이 모두 잃을 것이라고 선포하죠.
여로보암이 너무나 끔찍한 왕이었기 때문입니다. (암 6:13-14)
그래서 요나서가 시작하기도 전에
우리는 요나에 대해 의심이 들죠.

The book of Jonah has a becautiful design with all this literary 
pairing and symmetry. 
So you have chapters 1 and 3, telling the story of Jonah's encounter with non-Israelites, 
first with, some sailors and then with Jonah's hated enemies, the Ninevites. 
And each part offers a comic contrast between Jonah's selfishness and the pagans' humility and repentance.

요나서는 아름다운 문학적 구조를 가지고 있는데요,
짝을 이루며 대칭구조를 갖습니다.
1장과 3장은 요나가 이방인들을 만납니다.
1장은 요나가 선원들을 만나고
3장은 요나가 증오하는 적, 니느웨 백성들과의 만납니다.
그리고 각 부분은 '요나의 이기심'과 '이방인의 겸손과 회개'가 대조적으로 묘사됩니다.

Chapter two and four contains prayers of Jonah; 
one is a prayer of repentance, kind of, 
and the other is a prayer in which Jonah chews out God for being too nice. 

2장과 4장은 요나의 기도를 담고 있습니다.
그 중 하나는 일종의 회개 기도이고
다른 하나는 너무나 자비로운 하나님에 대해 불평하는 기도입니다.

Now this careful design of the book is matched by a really unique style of narration. 
The story's full of all of these stereotyped characters,
who ironically do the exact opposite of what you think they would do. 
So you have the prophet, the man of God, who rebels and hates his own God.

이 책의 구성을 잘 살펴보면 매우 독특한 스타일로 서술하고 있습니다.
이야기 전체는 전형적인 인물들로 구성되어 있지만
역설적이게도 우리가 생각하는 것과 정반대로 행동하고 있습니다.
먼저 하나님의 사람인 선지자 요나가 등장하지만 그는 하나님께 반항하고 불순종합니다.

You have the sailors who are supposed to be really immoral but 
actually they have soft repentant hearts and turn to God in humility.
You have the king of the most powerful murderous empire on the planet
and he humbles himself before God because of Jonah's five-word sermon.
Ane even the king's cows repent. 
This kind of story fits what today we would call satire. 
These are stories about well-known figures who are place in extreme 
circumstances and they use humor and irony to critique their stupidity and character flaws.

부도덕할 것 같은 선원들은
실제로는 부드러운 마음으로 회개하고 겸손함으로 하나님께 돌아갑니다.
또한 니느웨왕은 강력한 권력과 잔인한 왕국의 왕이지만 그는 하나님 앞에 자신을 낮춥니다.
바로 요나의 다섯 단어로 이루어진 설교를 듣고 말이죠.
심지어 왕의 짐승까지 회개했습니다.
이러한 종류의 이야기는 오늘날 우리가 '풍자'라고 부르는 것과 일치합니다.
풍자에서는 잘 알려진 익숙한 인물들이 극단적인 상황에 놓이게 되고
그 인물들이 유머와 반어법을 사용해 자신들의 어리석음과 성격적 결함을 비판합니다.

Let's just dive in and we'll see how all the pieces work together. 
The story opens as God addresses Jonah and commissions him to go preach against the
evil and injustice in Nineveh, the capital city of Asstyrian Empire, Israel's bitter enemy. 
But insteaf of goind east to Nineveh, Jonah goes in the opposite direction, 
finding a ship going as far west as you can to Tarshish.
And the big quesiton here is, why?
Why does Jonah run? 
Is he afraid? Does he just not like the Nivevites?

자 이제 전체 내용을 살펴보도록 하겠습니다.
이 책은 하나님이 요나에게 주시는 임무로 시작하는데요.
이스라엘의 적인 앗수르 제국의 수도인 니느웨로 가서 그들의 악함과 부정의에 대해 선포하라고 하십니다. (1:2)
그러나 동쪽 니느웨로 가는 대신에 요나는 반대 방향으로 갑니다.
그리고 가능한 한 서쪽 멀리, 다시스로 가는 배를 발견했습니다.
지금 여기에서 큰 문제가 발생합니다. 왜?
왜 요나가 도망쳤을까요? 요나는 두려웠을까요? 그는 그저 니느웨가 싫었던 것일까요?

And were not told yet.
So the man of God tries to run from God. 
And he boards a ship full of pagan sailors. 
He goes down into the ship and then he falls asleep. 
So God sends a huge storm to wake up His prophet. 
Well, ironically the sailors above-board are wide awake of everything that's happening. 
They can discern that there's a divine power at work here. 
So they throw the dice and they discovered that Jonah, he is the culprit. 
So they ask Jonah to explain himself and Jonah spouts off
a whole bunch of religious mumbo-jumbo he says  
"Heah, I'm Hebrew and I worshop the LORD the God who made the sea and the dry land."
What a joke, right? 
God made the sea and the dry land alright, 
and Jonah's dumb enough to run from this God by getting on a boat? 

아직까지는 그 이유에 대한 설명을 찾을 수가 없습니다.
어쨌든 하나님의 사람이 하나님께로부터 도망가려고 하고 있습니다.
그는 이방 선원들이 가득 찬 배에 올라타고
배 밑층으로 내려가 잠들었습니다.
그 때, 하나님은 거대한 폭풍을 보내셔서 하나님의 선지자를 깨우십니다.
그런데, 아이러니하게도 배 위의 선원들은 일어나고 있는 모든 일에 분별력이 있어
이 일이 신의 영역에 속해 있음을 깨달았습니다.
그들은 제비를 뽑았고, 요나가 뽑혔습니다.
요나에게 어찌 된 일인지 설명할 것을 요구하죠.
요나는 주문 외우듯 여러 말을 쏟아 내며
“나는 히브리 사람이요. 바다와 육지를 지으신 하늘의 하나님 여호와를 경외하는 자입니다. “라고 말합니다.
이 얼마나 웃긴 말입니까?
하나님은 분명 바다와 육지를 만드셨죠. 정말 맞는 말이죠?
그렇다면 이러한 하나님으로부터 배를 타고 도망갈 만큼 요나는 멍청한 걸까요?

And when the sailors ask Jonah what they should do, 
he says "kill me, by throwing me overboard."
which kind of seems noble at first 
until you realize this could actually be his most selfish move yet. 
I mean what better way to avoid going to Nineveh.
So he puts his blood on these 
innocent sailors hands by trying to force them to kill him. 
They're relunctant, of course. And they repent to God even as they tossed him over. 
The storm subsides and they end up fearing the God of Israel. 
And unlike Jonah, they actually worship God. 

선원들이 요나에게 그들이 어떻게 해야 할지 물었을 때
“나를 바다 속에 던져 죽이시오” 라고 말합니다.
이 말은 처음에는 다소 멋져 보이지만
우리는 곧 이것이 요나의 이기적 동기였음을 알게 됩니다.
니느웨로 가는 것을 피할 수 있는 더 나은 방법이 과연 있을까요?
그는 그의 피를 이 죄 없는 선원들의 손에
묻히게 해서 결국 그들이 요나를 죽이도록 시켰던 것입니다.
물론 선원들은 죽이기를 꺼렸지만 요나를 결국 바다에 던지고 하나님께 회개합니다.

But god foils Jonah's plans to escape Nineveh. 
As Jonah's sinking, 
God provides this strange watery tomb for him. 
the stomach of a large fish. 
Now, of course under normal circumstances this would be certain death, 
but in this story, everything's upside down. 
And so Jonah's submarine death becomes his passage back to life.

하나님은 니느웨로 가지 않으려는 요나의 계획을 좌절시킨 것입니다.
요나가 바다로 가라앉을 때
하나님은 그를 위해 바다 속 무덤 같은 다소 이상한 것을 준비하십니다.
바로 큰 물고기의 뱃속이었습니다.
자, 이 일이 정상적인 상황이라면 틀림없이 요나는 죽었을 것입니다.
하지만 이 이야기에서 모든 것은 역전됩니다!
요나의 바다 밑 죽음은 요나가 생명을 다시 얻게 되는 통로가 됩니다.

Cramped in the stomach of this beast, Jonah utters a prayer; 
where he never technically says that he's sorry 
but he does thank God for not abandoning him 
and he promises that he will obey God from this point on no matter what. 
And God's response is quite comic: the whale vomits Jonah back onto dry land. 

물고기 배에 갇혀서 요나는 하나님께 기도합니다.
엄밀히 따지면 하나님께 잘못을 시인하지 않았지만
그는 하나님이 자신을 버리지 않으셨음에 감사를 드립니다.
요나는 이제 어떤 상황이라 하더라도 하나님께 순종할 것을 서원합니다.
여기에서 하나님의 반응이 참 재밌으신데요,
고래가 요나를 땅으로 토해 내도록 하셨던 것입니다.

So once again God commissions Jonah to go and preach in Nineveh
and Jonah compiles. 
We're told that Nineveh was a gigantic city; 
it would take days to walk through. 
So Jonah gets one day in and here is his message 
"Fourty more days and Nineveh will be overtuned."
It's five words in Hebrew. 
Now, his sermon is very short and it's also odd; I mean loiok at what's missing. 
There is no mention of what the Nenevites have done wrong
or of what they should do to respond. 
There is no mention of who might overtune them. 
And most noticeable, 
there is no mentions of God. 
What's going on here? 
Has jonah intentionally given the bare minimum of information? 
It's like he's trying to sabotage his own message
or ensure the Nivenites destruction. 
There's just no effort on Jonah's part here. Whatever his motives are, 
the plan doesn't work.
Because no sooner does he utter this five-word sermon that 
the king of Nineveh, the entire city including
all its coes, repent in sorrow and ashes. 
So for the second time, these evil pagan
show themselves to be more responsive 
than God's own prophet. 
So God forgives the Ninevites. 
And He doesn't bring destruction on the city 

그래서 다시 한 번 하나님은 요나에게 니느웨로
가서 외치라(3:2)고 사명을 주시고
요나는 순종합니다.
니느웨가 꽤 거대한 도시여서
다 돌아보려면 걸어서 며칠이 걸리는 도시입니다.
요나는 도착한 첫날에 이런 메시지를 전합니다.
“40일 후에 니느웨는 전복될 것이다.”
히브리어로는 다섯 개의 단어인데요.
그의 메시지는 간단하지만 다소 이상합니다.
무엇이 빠졌는지 살펴보면
* 니느웨 백성들이 무엇을 잘못했는지
* 어떤 반응을 해야 하는지
누가 그들을 무너뜨릴 것인지에 대한 설명이 없습니다.
가장 눈에 띄는 것은
*하나님에 대한 언급이 없었다는 것입니다.
이게 도대체 어떻게 된 일일까요?
요나는 의도적으로 최소한의 정보만 제공하고 있는 것일까요?
이것은 마치 그가 자신의 메시지를 방해라도 하려는 것처럼 보이기도 하고
니느웨의 멸망을 확신하는 것처럼 보이기도 합니다.
책의 이 부분에서 어떤 답도 주지 않지만 그의 동기가 무엇이든 간에
그의 계획은 제대로 실행되지 않습니다.
왜냐하면 그가 다섯 단어의 설교를 하자마자
니느웨의 왕과, 짐승을 포함해서 도시 전체는 슬픔과 재를 뒤집어쓰고 회개합니다.
두 번째로, 이 악한 이방인들은 더 적극적으로 반응하는 모습을 보여줍니다.
하나님의 선지자보다 말이죠.
그래서 하나님은 니느웨 백성들을 용서하시고
그 땅에 재앙을 내리지 않으셨던 것이죠.

Now here's the brilliant par of the story. 
The last word of Jonah's short sermon "overtuned" means just that "turned over". 
And it can refer to a city being overthrown or destroyed, like Sofom and Gomarrah. 
But it can also be used of something being transformed, 
like turned over and changed into its opposite. 
And so comicalkly Jonah's words actually came true
but not in the way that he intended. 
Niveveh does get turned over as Jona's enemies repeant and find God's mercy. 

이 부분이 정말 빛나는 스토리인데요.
요나의 짧은 설교의 마지막 단어는 “전복시키다”인데 이것은 “뒤집다”라는 뜻이기도 합니다.
즉, 도시가 무너지고, 파괴될 것이라는 뜻이죠. 마치 소돔과 고모라처럼 말이죠.(창 19:21)
하지만 이 단어는 무엇인가가 변형되어 사용되어질 수 있음을 뜻하기도 합니다.
즉, 뒤바뀌어서 정반대로 역전되는 것 말이죠.(삼상 10:6)
그리고 정말 흥미롭게도 요나의 예언은 진짜로 실현되었습니다.
요나가 의도한 대로는 아니었지만요.
요나의 적인 니느웨 백성들이 회개하고 하나님의 자비를 구할 때 니느웨는 정말 뒤집어지게 됩니다.

The final chapter brings all the pieces together. 
Jonah, he's fuming mad. 
And he utters his second prayer. 
He first tells God why he ran away back in chapter one. 
It was not because he was afraid.
Rather it was because he knew that God was so merciful. 
And this is great, Jonah actually quotes 
God's own description of Himself from the book of Exodus
and he throws it back in God's face as an insult 
He says he knew that God is compassionate and that He would find 
and that He would find some way to forgive these horrible Nivevites. 
You can just hear the disguest in Jonah's voice. 
Jonah then cuts off the conversation. 
And he prays that God would kill him on the spot
He's rather die than live with the God who forgives His enemies. 

마지막 장은 이 모든 것이 합쳐져 있습니다.
요나는 약이 올라 미칠 것 같아서
하나님께 두 번째 기도를 올립니다.
그는 1장에서 자신이 도망갔었던 이유를 이제 하나님께 말합니다.
두려워서 도망갔던 것이 아니었고
그는 하나님이 너무나 자비로우신 분임을 알았기 때문이었다고 말합니다.(4:2)
정말 놀라운 것은 요나는
출애굽기에서 하나님이 자신을 설명하는 부분을 그대로 언급했다는 것입니다.
그는 모욕적인 투로 하나님을 비난합니다.
요나는 하나님은 자비로우셔서(출34:6)
불의한 니느웨 백성들을 용서할 방법을 찾고 계심을 알았다고 말합니다.
우리는 요나의 말투에서 혐오감을 느낄 수 있을 것입니다.
그리고 나서 요나는 그 대화를 중단하고
그 자리에서 자신을 죽여 달라고 기도하죠.
그의 적들을 용서하시는 그 하나님과 살기보다는 죽는 편이 낫겠다 라고 말합니다.

Fortunate for Jonah, God doesn't comply 
and simply asks if Jonah's anger is even justified. 
Jonah ignores the quesiton and he goes outside the city 
to camp on a nearby hill waiting to see what might happen, 
You know, the Nivevites might repeat of their repentance and get roasted after all.
What happens next is very odd. 
God provides this veney plant to shade Jonah from the sun 
and that makes him quite happy. 
But then God sends a tiny worm to eat up the plant 
and so Jonah loses his shade. 
And there in the heat of the sun, Jonah asks again that God kill him. 
So God again, asks Jonah bark back
"Absolutely just let me die!" And those are Jonah's last words in the story. 

그러나 다행히도 하나님께서는 요나의 죽여달라는 기도에 응답하지 않으시고
요나가 화내는 것이 과연 옳은 것인지 질문하십니다.
요나는 그 질문을 무시하고 성읍 밖으로 나가서
주변 언덕에 초막을 짓고 무슨 일이 일어나는지 보기 위해 기다립니다.
알다시피, 니느웨 백성들은 그들의 죄를 회개했고 결국 멸망하지 않게 됩니다.
그 다음은 정말 기이한 내용이 나옵니다.
하나님은 넝쿨을 준비하셔서 요나에게 그늘을 허락하십니다.
요나는 이 넝쿨로 크게 기뻐하였습니다.
하지만 하나님은 벌레를 보내어 그 벌레가 넝쿨을 씹어 먹게 하셔서
요나는 그늘을 잃게 되었습니다.
따갑게 내리쬐는 태양 때문에, 요나는 다시 한 번 그를 죽여 달라고 하나님께 간청합니다.
하나님도 또 다시, 그의 분노가 옳은 것인지 물었고 이에 요나는 부르짖길
“그렇습니다, 나를 죽게 해 주십시오” 이 말은 이 책에서 요나의 마지막 말입니다.

God's final words or what concludes the book.
He says that this whole vine incident was an attempt to get through to Jonah. 
Right, Jonah got all concerned and emotional over this vine, 
which he only enjoyed for a day. 
And God asked Jonah 
"you know, aren't humans a bit more valuable than vines?
I mean, isn't it ok if God might 
feel the same kind of emotion and convern for the city of Nineveh, 
that's full of thousands of people, who have lost their way and also their cows?" 
And that's how the boiok ends, with God asking
Jonah for permission to show mercy to His enemies. 
And what is Jonah's answer? The story doesn't say. Because that's not the point. 

하나님의 마지막 말씀으로 이 책은 끝이 나는데요.
하나님은 이 넝쿨 사건이 요나에게 전달하시려는 하나님의 메시지였다고 말씀하십니다.
요나는 이 넝쿨을 아끼고 즐거워했죠.
단지 하루 동안 즐겼을 뿐인데 말이죠.
하나님은 요나에게
“사람이 넝쿨보다 더 귀하지 아니하냐?” 물으십니다.
다시 말하면 이렇게 이해할 수 있지 않을까요?
하나님께서 요나가 넝쿨로 인해 느꼈던 같은 감정으로 니느웨를 바라보시고 아끼셨다는 것이죠.
좌우를 분별하지 못하는 수많은 백성들과 가축들로 가득한 큰 성읍 니느웨를 말입니다.
이 책은 하나님께서 요나에게 원수에게도 자비를 베풀 것을 말씀하시면서 끝맺고 있습니다.
요나의 답은 무엇일까요? 이 책은 알려주지 않습니다. 그것이 핵심이 아니니까요.

The point is that the book is trying to mess with you.
And God's questions here actually addressed to you, the reader.  
Are you ok with the fact that God loves your enemy? 
And so this book holds a mirror up to the one who reads it. 
In Johah we see the worst parts of our own character magnified, 
which should generate humility and gratitude that God would love his enemies
and put up with the Jonah in all of us. 

핵심은 사실 이 책을 통해 여러분에게 질문합니다.
하나님께서 실제로 여러분에게 물으십니다.
하나님이 우리의 원수까지 사랑하신다는 사실을 우리가 받아들일 수 있느냐는 것입니다.
이 책은 책을 읽고 있는 사람에게 거울을 비추어 주는 것 같습니다.
요나서에서 우리는 우리의 악함이 점점 커져가는 것을 보지만
하나님이 그의 원수까지도 사랑하시는 것에 대해 결국에는 감사해야 하고
우리 안에 있는 요나 같은 모습을 이겨내야 한다는 것입니다.

And so this strange story actually becomes a message 
of good news about the wideness of 
God's mercy that ought to challenge us to the core. 
And that's the book of Jonah.

이 이상한 이야기는 복음에 대한 메시지가 됩니다.
즉, 하나님의 크신 자비하심으로 우리에게도 원수까지 사랑하도록 말씀하고 있습니다.
이것이 바로 요나서입니다.
