So, we are walking throught the Gospel of Luke. We reached the end of Jesus' long road tripto Jerusalem. He has arrived. He rides a donkey down the Mount of Olives towards the city. All these crowds are forming and people are singing: "Praise the king who comes in the name of the Lord!" They are laying down their cloaks in front of him. Why all this royal treatment? 

자, 우리 같이 누가복음을 따라 가봅시다. 우리는 예수님의 긴 여정의 끝인 예루살렘에 다다랐습니다. 주님께서 예루살렘에 도착하셨습니다. 그는 어린 나귀를 타고 올리브산에서 그 도시로 내려가십니다. 사람들이 몰려들어서 찬양합니다. "복되시다, 주님의 이름으로 오시는 임금님!" 그들은 자신들의 걷옷을 벗어서 그가 아시는 길 앞에 깔아놓았습니다. 왜 예수님을 왕처럼 대했을까요?

OK. Israel's ancient prophets promised tht one day God himself would arrive and rescue his people and rule the world. Other times, the prophets spoke about a coming king who would ride into Jerusalem to bring justice and peace. 

이스라엘의 예언자들은 예언했습니다. 어느날 하나님이 직접 이 땅에 오셔서 그의 백성을 구하시고 세상을 다스릴것이라고 말이죠. 그리고 또한 예언자는 정의와 평화를 예루살렘에 가져오기 위해 임하시는 왕에 대해서 이야기했습니다.(슥 9:9)

So, Jesus is activating all these hopes that he is that king, and everyoneis ecstatic. Well, not everybody. The religious leaders, they think Jesus is a threat to their power. So, they are not happy. Even more striking, Jesus himself is distraught. He is actually weeping as he rides. Well, why? 

예수님은 이런 모든 소망들, 즉 그가 바로 그 왕이라는 소망을 불러 일으키셨고, 모두는 열광했습니다. 사실, 모두는 아니었죠.
대제사장과 서기관들은 예수님이 자신들의 권력을 위협할 것이라 생각했습니다. 그래서 그들은 언짢아 했습니다. 더 놀라운 일은, 예수님은 마음이 복잡하셨습니다. 그는 예루살렘에 들어가실때 울고 계셨습니다. 왜 그러셨을까요? 

Well, Jesus can see what is coming. He knows that he won't be accepted as Israel's king. And he knows that Israel will keep going down the destructive path, neglecting the poor, stirring up rebellion against their Roman oppressors. And he knows that it will lead to death. It breaks his heart. And, it riles him up. 

예수님은 후에 어떤 일이 일어날지 알고 계셨습니다. 예수님은 사람들이 자신을 이스라엘의 왕으로 받아들이지 않을 것을 알고 계셨습니다. 그리고 이스라엘이 계속 멸망의 수렁으로 빠지고 있다는 것과 가난한 자들을 억압하고, 폭정을 일삼는 로마에게 반란이 일어날 것을 알고 계셨습니다. 그리고 이것이 죽음으로 몰고갈 것을 알고 계셨습니다. 이것이 그의 마음을 찢어질듯 아프게 했습니다. 그리고 이것이 그를 화나게 하였습니다.

First thing he does in Jerusalem is marching to the temple courts. He drives out the moeny changers, disrupting the entire sacrificial system. Yeah, he is staging a prophetic protest. He stands in the center of the countyard shouting out words from Israel's ancient prophets. This is supposed to be a place of worship, but you have made it a den of rebels!" 

예수님께서 예루살렘에 들어가 처음 하신 일은 성전으로 가시는 것이었습니다. 환전상들을 몰아내시고, 희생제물을 파는 상인들도 내쫒으셨습니다. 맞습니다, 그는 예언자적 면모를 보여주시고 있습니다. 그는 성전의 뜰 가운데 서서 예언서의 말씀을 외치셨습니다. 성경에 기록하기를 내 집은 기도하는 집이될 것이다 하였다. 그런데 너희는 그것을 강도의 소굴로 만들어 버렸다.(눅 19:26, 새번역)

A den of rebels? Yeah, he is quoting from the prophet Jeremiah who stood in this same spot, the center of Israel's religious and political power. And he offered the same critique of Israel's leaders: that they are rebellious and corrupt. And, they get the message and start to plan to have him killed, which is no surprise to Jesus. In fact, he planned that all of this would happen during Passover. 

강도의 소굴이라니요? 맞습니다. 예수님은 예언자 예레미야가 서있던 바로 그 자리, 이스라엘의 종교, 정치권력의 중심이자
불순종하고 부패한 이스라엘 지도층을 비판했던 바로 그 자리에서 예수님도 예레미야를 인용하며 같은 비판을 하고 계십니다.
그들은 그 비판을 받자마자 예수님을 어떻게 살해할지 계획을 세웠습니다. 그러나 그 사실은 예수님껜 별로 놀라운 일이 아니었습니다. 사실, 예수님은 이 모든일이 유월절 기간에 일어나도록 계획하셨기 때문입니다.

This is the Holy Week when Jewish people celebrate their ancient story of how God liberated them from slavery and invited them into a covenant relationship. So Jesus uses the symbols of Passover to reveal the meaning of his coming death. The broken bread was his broken body. And the wine was his blood that would establish a new covenant relatiionship between God and Israel. Jesus was going to die for his people and open up a new way forward. 

그 시기는 거룩한 주간이어서, 유대인들은 하나님께서 어떻게 그들을 종살이에서 해방시키셨는지, 그리고 그들을 언약백성으로 삼으셨는지를 기억하고 기념하였습니다. 그래서 예수님은 유월절의 상징을 사용하여 자신에게 닥칠 죽음의 의미를 드러내려 하셨습니다. 찢어진 빵은 그의 찢어진 육체였습니다. 포도주는 그의 피로써, 하나님과 이스라엘의 새로운 언약을 맺는 것이었습니다. 예수님은 그의 백성을 위해 죽을 운명이었고, 그로 인해 새로운 길을 여셨습니다.

After the mean, Jesus takes his disciples to a garden to pray. And he strugles with the vry human desire to save his life instead of sacrificing it. But he overcomes this temptation. 

저녁식사를 마치고 예수님은 그의 제자들과 올리브 산에 올라가셔서 기도하셨습니다. 그리고 기도하시면서 자신의 생명을 희생제물로 내어주기 보단 보전하고 싶은 인간적인 갈망과 씨름하셨습니다. 그러나 예수님은 그 시험을 이기셨습니다.

It is here where the religious leaders with the temple guards find him and arrest him. Now, Jerusalem was being ruled by the Roman Empire. So, the temple leaders could not execute Jesus without permission from their Roman governor, a man named Pontius Pilate. So, they make up their charge that Jesus is a rebel king, stirring up revolution against the Roman Emperor. 

여기가 바로 대제사장과 서기관, 그리고 성전지기들이 예수님을 찾아 체포한 곳입니다. 그땐, 예루살렘은 로마제국에 의해 지배받는 상태였습니다. 그렇기 때문에, 로마 총독이었던 본디오 빌라도의 허락이 없이는 예수님을 처형할 수 없었습니다. 그래서 그들은 예수님이 로마를 대항하여 반란을 이르키는 자들의 수괴라고 모함했습니다.

Pilate askes Jesus, "Are you the King of the Jews?" Jesus answers, "You say so." Pilate can see that Jesus is an innocent man and he does not deserve death. But the leaders keep insisting that he is dangerous. So they negotiate a compromise. 

빌라도는 예수께 물었습니다. "당신이 유대인의 왕이요?" 예수님이 대답하셨습니다. "당신이 그렇게 말하고 있습니다." 빌라도는 예수님이 무죄인 것과 사형을 당할 아무런 이유가 없음을 알았습니다. 그러나 대제사장과 서기관들은 계속해서 예수님이 위험한 존재라고 주장했습니다. 그래서 그들은 타협점을 찾아냈습니다.

Pilate will release an actual rebel against Rome, a man name Barabbas, instead of Jesus. So the innocent is handed over in the place of the guilty. Jesus is taken away with two other accused criminals and nailed to a Roman execution device. 

빌라도는 예수님 대신에 실제로 로마에 반기를 들었던 바라바를 놓아주었습니다. 그래서 죄가 없으신 분이 범죄자가 당하는 대접을 받게 되었습니다. 예수님은 다른 두 범죄자와 함께 로마의 사형틀에 못박히게 되었습니다.

People are mocking him. "Hey, if you're the messianic king, save yourself and us." But Jesus loved his enemies to the very end, offering hope to one of the criminals dying beside him. He even prayed for his executors, "Father, forgive them. They don't know what they are doing."

사람들은 예수님을 비웃습니다. "당신이 그 기름부음받은 왕이라면, 당신과 우리를 구해보시오!"(23:35)
그러나 예수님은 그의 원수를 끝까지 사랑하셨고, 그 옆에서 죽은 한 죄인에게 희망을 주셨습니다.(23:43)
그는 심지어 사형을 집행한 사람들을 위해서도 기도했습니다. "아버지 저 사람들을 용서하여주십시오, 저 사람들은 자기네가 무슨 일을 하는지를 알지 못합니다."(눅 23:24, 새번역)

Then the sky darkened as an innocent man died the death of a rebel. And then Jesus cried out with ancient words from Israel's Psalms, "Father, into your hands I commit my spirit." And then Jesus died, innocent and alone. 

무고한 분의 죽음이 가까웠을때, 하늘이 어두워졌습니다. 그리고 그때 예수님은 시편에서 한 구절을 외치셨습니다. 아버지, 내 영혼을 아버지 손에 맡깁니다. (시 31:5) 그리고 예수님은 죄 없으신채로, 쓸쓸하게 숨을 거두었습니다.
