전도서(Ecclesiastes) 개요 - 동영상 및 한글/영어 자막(Bible Project)

예언서 다니엘을 마치고 전도서 QT로 들어갑니다. 다니엘서는 미래를 예언하는 책이기도 하고 내용도 쉽지 않았지만 흥미로운 구성을 가지고 있었고 많은 메시지를 우리에게 전달했습니다. 

다니엘서 하면 다니엘과 사자굴을 떠올리는데, 전도서는 '헛되다' 로 계속되는 책으로 기억되어 운명론 또는 허무주의의 책이 아닌가 생각되곤 합니다. 학자들은 이 책의 저자를 솔로몬이나 익명의 저자일 가능성이 있다고 합니다. 아래 링크하고 스크립트를 정리한 동영상은 바이블 프로젝트의 영문과 한글 내용입니다. 그 설명에서도 볼 수 있듯이 '허무하다, 헛되다'로 번역되는 히브리어 'Hevel'이라는 단어는 구름과 수증기를 뜻한다고 합니다. 그리고 '태양 아래서 헛되다'고 말합니다. 즉 저자는 '하나님을 떠나 해 아래에서 사는 것이 헛되다'라고 고백합니다. 

영문 번역을 찾아보니 'Meaningless, Vanity of vanities, Futility of futilities, Absolute futility'로 번역되는데, 한글로 인생의 '무의미, 허영심, 허무', 즉 인생의 덧없음을 뜻합니다.

동영상에서 파이프 담배를 물고 나오는 저자의 담배에서 나오는 고체인 연기처럼 잡힐듯 말듯, 인생은 잡을 수 없는 신비한 존재의 영역에 속한 것이고, 그 인생이 헛되지 않기 위해 우리가 어떻게 해야 할지를 독백 또는 푸념 형태로 전달하는 것 같습니다. 전도서는 전체를 읽어본 적이 없는데, 흥미로운 책일 것 같습니다. 아래 바이블 프로젝트의 영문 및 한글 스크립트 내용, 그리고 동영상을 링크합니다.

We're exploring three books in the Bible known as the wisdom literature
Proverbs, Ecclesiastes and Job
and they're all asking the question what does it mean to live well in this world
So we looked at proverbs who you could think of as a bright young teacher
She's all about pursuing wisdom an attribute of God that's woven into reality
and she's optimistic that if you use wisdom you will build a successful life

저희는 지금 성경에서 지혜서로 알려진 세 권의 책을 살펴보고 있습니다.
잠언, 전도서 그리고 욥기입니다.
지혜서는 이 땅에서 잘 산다는 것이 어떤 의미인지 질문합니다.
우리는 총명하고 젊은 선생님과 같은 잠언을 보았습니다.
그녀는 현실 속에 엮여진 하나님의 속성인 지혜를 추구하며
당신이 지혜를 잘 사용하면 성공적 삶을 살 수 있다고 낙관합니다

but then we come to Ecclesiastes who's more like the sharp middle-aged critic and he says
You think using wisdom will bring you success
You'd better think again because life here under the sun is meaningless
and that's a phrase you use a lot in this book
but to understand this book we have to realize first that we're hearing two voices
So first there's the teacher and we've been calling him the critic
He's the main voice in the book

그런데 그 다음에 나오는 전도서는
예리한 중년 비평가와 같은데 그는 이렇게 말합니다.
"당신은 지혜를 사용하면 성공할 것이라 생각하는군요."
"다시 생각하는게 좋을거요. 해 아래에서 삶은 헛된 것입니다"
이 책에서 많이 사용되는 구절이죠.
그러나 이 책을 이해하기 위해서
두 개의 목소리가 말하고 있는 것을 알아야 합니다.
먼저 선생님이 한 명 있는데 우리는 그를 '비평가'로 부릅니다.
그가 이 책의 주된 목소리입니다.

but he is introduced to us by another figure the author
and he's the one who's collected the critics words
and then at the end of the book summarizes everything and gets the final word
So why does the author wants to hear from the critic?
He wants to turn your view of the world upside down
and he's gonna let the critic explore three really disturbing things about the world
and we should warn you these are pretty intense

하지만 그는 다른 인물인 '저자'에 의해 기록됩니다.
'저자'는 '비평가'들의 비평들을 수집한 사람입니다.
책 끝에 가서는 모든 것을 요약하고 마지막 교훈을 기록합니다.
그럼 왜 '저자'는 '비평가'의 말을 듣고 싶어할까요?
'저자'는 당신의 세계관을 뒤집어놓고 싶어해요.
그리고 '저자'는 이 세상에 관해서
세 가지 '비평가' 의 관점을 기록합니다.
이것들의 강도가 좀 쎄다고 미리 경고를 드립니다.

Yeah! So the first is the march of time
whereas the critic says
Generations come and generations go
but the earth it's been here long before us and we'll be long after
No one remembers people from long ago and all the people yet to come
They too will be forgotten by those who come after them
and so on a cosmic scale, you and I, we are just ibilik
stars are born and then they die and form planets with orbit new stars
and those planets they change over time and eventually burnt up
And admits this cosmic backdrop, my entire existence is like a blink in time
which leads to the critic's second disturbing observation

네. 첫 번째는 '시간의 흐름'입니다.
'비평가'가 말합니다.
"한 세대는 가고 한 세대는 오되
땅은 영원히 있도다" (잠 1:4)
"이전 세대들이 기억됨이 없으니
장래 세대도 그후 세대들과 함께 기억됨이 없으리라" (잠1:11)
이 우주적 규모에서 당신과 저는 그저 순간에 불과한거죠.
별들이 태어나고 죽고 새 별들의 궤도를 따르는 행성을 만듭니다
시간이 지나면 그 행성들도 변하고 결국 다 타 버립니다.
이 우주적인 배경 속에, 인간의 존재는 찰나입니다.
이것은 비평가의 두 번째 관찰로 이어지는데

that we are all going to die
Humans face the same fate as the animals
Death, all people, the righteous and the wicked
The good and the bad
Those who offer sacrifices to God and those who do not
They all share the same destiny
all this activity and madness then we all join the dead
Man! This book is depressing
and so is the final disturbing thing for the critic

'우리는 모두 죽는다'는 것입니다.
"짐승이 죽음같이 사람도 죽으니" (전3:19)
"모든 사람에게 임하는 그 모든 것이 일반이라 의인과 악인,
선한 자와 깨끗한 자와 깨끗하지 아니한 자,
제사를 드리는 자와 제사를 드리지 아니하는 자에게
모든 사람의 결국은 일반이라
곧 인생의 마음에는 악이 가득하여 그들의 평생에 미친 마음을 품고 있다가
후에는 죽은 자들에게로 돌아가는 것이라" (전9:2-3)
약간 우울해지네요.
'비평가'의 마지막 관찰 역시 그렇습니다.

and that is life's random nature
So in Proverbs, life isn't random
There's a clear cause-and-effect relationship between doing the right thing and being rewarded
But the fact is that life doesn't always work that way
The critic has observed a glitch in the system
He calls it, Chance, or in his words
The race doesn't always go to the Swift
nor the battle to the strong
nor does food always come to the wise
or wealth to the brilliant
or favor to the educated
time and chance happen to them all

'인생은 예측할수 없다'는 것입니다.
잠언에서의 인생은 예측불가한게 아닙니다
선행과 보상 사이에 명확한 인과관계가 있습니다
그러나 사실은 인생이란게 항상 인과성이 있는게 아니죠
'비평가'는 시스템의 작은 결함을 확인했습니다
그는 이를 '시기, 기회'이라 부릅니다.
"빠른 경주자들이라고 선착하는 것이 아니며
용사들이라고 전쟁에 승리하는 것이 아니며
지혜자들이라고 음식물을 얻는 것도 아니며
지식인들이라고 은총을 입는 것이 아니니
이는 시기와 기회는 그들 모두에게 임함이니라 (잠 9:11)

So his point is that you can't really control anything in life
It's just way too unpredictable
so if i want to master life
then you're setting yourself up for a fall
Now throughout the book, the Critic uses a metaphor to tie together all of these disturbing ideas
Nearly 40 times he says that everything in life is "Hevel"
it's a Hebrew word that means smoke or vapor
Like smoke, life is beautiful and mysterious
It takes one shape and before you know it
It takes a new shape
and smoke look solid but try and grab it it will slip right through your fingers
and when you're stuck in the thick of it like fog, it's impossible to see clearly

비평가의 요점은 인생의 어떤 것도 통제할수 없다는 것이죠
모든 것이 예측불가합니다.
제 인생을 지배하고 싶다면요?
그건 넘어지려고 준비하는거죠
책 전체를 통해, 비평가는 이 모든 불편한 진실들을
한데 엮으며 은유를 사용합니다.
무려 40여 차례 인생의 모든 것이 마치 '헤벨' 과 같다고 합니다.
이는 히브리어로 연기 혹은 수증기를 뜻하는 단어입니다
연기처럼, 인생은 아름답고 신비로워서
한 형태였는데, 그걸 이해하기도 전에 새로운 형태가 되죠.
연기가 고체처럼 보인다해도
그걸 잡으려하면 손가락 사이로 빠져나가고 말죠.
안개처럼 두꺼운 연기속에 갇히면 제대로 보는 것이 불가능하죠.

Now our modern translations have lost the metaphor
and they usually translate "Hevel" as meaningless
but if you read closely the critic isn't saying that life has no meaning
but rather that its meaning is never clear
Like smoke, life is confusing
It's disorienting and uncontrollable
So what are we supposed to do with all of this?
Well! Surprisingly, the critic first of all acknowledges the perspective of Proverbs
He says it's a really good idea to learn wisdom and to live in the fear of the Lord
Really?! I mean he just said that doesn't guarantee success
but he knows it's the right thing to do

현대의 번역들은 이 비유를 놓치고 말았어요.
그들은 보통 "Hevel (헤벨)"을 '헛되다'로 번역하는데요.
자세히 읽어보면 '비평가'는 인생이 허무하다고 말하는게 아니라
인생의 의미가 '분명하지 않다'고 말하죠.
연기처럼, 삶은 혼란스럽고 제어불가능이라는거죠
그럼 도대체 어떻게 해야 할까요?
놀랍게도, '비평가'는 먼저 잠언의 관점을 인정하고 있습니다.
지혜를 배우고 주님을 경외하며 사는 것이 좋은 생각이라 말하죠
정말요? '비평가'는 그게 성공을 보장하지 않는다고 했잖아요.
그러나 그는 그게 옳은 일이란 것을 알고 있어요.

but secondly and more often he says that since you can't control your life
You should stop trying
Learn to hold things with an open hand because you really only have control over one thing
and that's your attitude towards the present moment
Stop worrying he says and choose to enjoy a good conversation with a friend
or the Sun on your face
or a good meal with people that you care about
The simple things in life
Yes and both the good things and the bad because both are rich gifts from God
and that's the surprising wisdom of ecclesiasticus

두 번째로 그는 더 자주 말하는 것은
인생을 통제하려 하는것은 불가능하니 애쓰지 말라고해요.
손을 열고 물건을 잡는 법을 배워야 합니다
왜냐하면 정말 통제할 수 있는 것은 단 한가지인데
그건 그 순간에 대한 태도입니다.
걱정을 그만두고 친구들과 좋은 대화를 나누라고 말합니다.
혹은 내리쬐는 햇살이나
당신이 아끼는 이들과 좋은 식사를 하는 것도 되겠네요.
사소한 것들이네요?
네! 좋은 것과 나쁜 것 모두 하나님의 풍성한 선물이거든요.
이것이 바로 전도서가 말하는 놀라운 지혜입니다.

Listening to the critic is painful
and can lead you into some dark places
and that's why the author speaks up at the end of the book
He doesn't want you to lose hope
He wants to make you humble
Into someone who trusts that life has meaning even when you can't make sense of it
that one day God will clear the Hevel and bring his justice on all that we've done
and so he tells us that the proper response to all of this is to fear the lord
and keep his Commandments
and that's the book of Ecclesiastes

'비평가'의 이야기를 듣는건 고통스럽네요.
당신을 어딘가 어두운 곳으로 데려갈 수도 있죠
그게 '저자'가 책의 끝에서 입을 여는 이유입니다.
그는 당신이 소망을 잃는게 아니라, 겸손해져서
이해할 수 없을 때라도 인생이 의미가 있다고 믿기를 원하세요
어느날 하나님께서 "헤벨"을 지우시고
우리의 모든 일 위에 그의 정의를 가져오실 것입니다
